SELF DIRECTED BRIEF
Animation Short (Title Pending)
Background: My first idea (which this blog was named after) was of a steampunk robot in a industrial city still functioning in an echo of a time it was inhabited by humans. However the more I tried to develop it the more and more I was afraid that people would continue to utter “like Wally?” (and yet no one says anything about Johnny Number 5 of Short Circuit) and so I felt that I had to abandon that idea. That was a lengthy debate I struggled with but I think it was for the best. My other idea was brought on by a random daydream I had.
Brief: To do a short animation, the narrative for which is still at the very earl stages. Thus at the moment I want it to be a pilot but it could end up as a trailer if I can’t get the story together. It will consist of the protagonist, who we will call the French Man for now, walking to a location, a fight scene breaking out in a nightclub and a showdown with bits of the more explanatory narrative broken up between that in flashbacks/cutaways. While the narrative is lacking the world where this takes place is consistently getting clearer.
It is world full of clowns, by that I mean that everyone is born with a unique clown face. The protagonist is a mime, and I choose this because the day dream started with the novel idea of him fighting in a bar fight with a sword that quite frankly, isn’t there. The sword itself can be real but cannot be seen or heard, just its effect on objects and people.
Research: As you can see from previous posts I plan to draw from a great deal of inspiration ant technique from a variety of Adult Swim Cartoons - the main one being Metalocalypse but also The Boondocks for their action shots. That all said I still wish to develop my own style in terms of art and not produce what looks like fan art of those shows.

Action Example
One of my ideas has a fight scene, I will be looking at Boondocks to guide me on that one:
More Adult Swim
Some other examples of animations I am looking at of inspiration:

Though if that is too hard...
Though if I do end up going more in the way of a cartoon I will be looking at the style used in Xombie.
They are a little old now but still work really well. Now while I have been looking at these I am really more concerned on settling on a project in terms of rough story outline and characters - knowing how I want to make it is good but useless when I am not sure on what I am making.
Maybe a little NSFW
After that animation bit in studio I put on my Metalocalypse DVD and after watching through it again (shocked at how long it had been) I think I will be using it as a base for my animation. By that I mean using multiple layers of (hopefully) detailed character parts and getting them to move in an appropriate and seamlessly way. I think this will be a better base to build up from then my original which was the amateurish but effective style from City of Rott.
Why no update?
Ok I am just going to upload things I have been looking at. At this point I would say I am going with a short animation for my final project but I will wait before writing about any ideas I have regarding story and setting because my two main contenders are very weak at the moment.
As for why this was a little slack, I have been trying to get my old laptop up and running in light of what happened to my computer. Also any blog I have ever made went into a stagnant state relatively quickly so I am still working on avoiding that here.

One stumbled step for man...
Here is the stop motion test, taken longer to do this then I would like but it seems my computer registry has gone and gotten itself corrupted. Looks like more quality time in the lab until it is working again.
Also my ideas for the final project still need a lot of work, settings I can think up and fragmented characters but narrative will be a bitch to say the least.
(NOTE: Updated this as the GIF did not animate and the post was in the limbo known as "scheduled")
